Fitness yoga classes in Leeds and Wetherby

Yoga Convert classes are for people who didn’t think they would enjoy yoga. Yoga Converts don’t care if you can reach your toes; we are too busy reaching for ours. We don’t take a serious, high-minded or traditional approach. We try stuff, we fall over, we laugh, we try again.

Based on the challenging, flowing Rocket and Ashtanga styles of yoga, Yoga Convert classes are firmly workout based and deliver strength and flexibility fast. No chanting, no temple bells.

If, like me, you thought yoga was a tame workout – think again! Sessions are fast paced, challenging…but fun and not at all daunting.

  • Having trained hard all of my life, yoga is now challenging me and my body in a whole new way…Commando training was a walk in the park compared to Helena’s class last Friday!! I’d recommend this to any guy who thinks he has REAL functional strength. I’m definitely a convert!

Helena’s Ashtanga class is a treat…I love her easygoing manner. This is coupled with serious knowledge and the ability to communicate and demonstrate the correct way to move into and hold a pose.

Fantastic classes which I highly recommend…The perfect antidote to running and cycling as they stretch you out and give you a challenging workout at the same time. Add Helena’s ever present humour and you will never find the classes dull.

HELENA

I got into yoga following more than a decade as a master instructor and award-winning performer of Egyptian dance. I didn't think yoga would be for me - I was wrong. I frickin' loved it. I knew it would do me good - I was right. But I hadn't realised just how much good.

Anyway it kinda snowballed from there and I wound up qualifying as a teacher, taking 200 hr training and 50 hours Rocket training with It's Yoga master instructor, Jamie Blowers.

I'm a yoga convert. I think you will be too.

See you on the mat.

what-to-expect

What to expect

Yoga Convert classes are suitable for all levels from beginners upwards - no previous experience needed. You don’t need to be flexible to give it a go; in fact the stiffer you are at the start, the more you’ll get out of it! You’ll be offered options and alternatives so you get a great workout regardless of whether you’re a Yoga Pretzel or Stiff-as-a-Board.

You do need basic fitness - if you are very sedentary, have poor fitness or have/are recovering from an injury then a gentler style of yoga will be a better place to begin.

Don't forget to have a quick word with your doc before joining us if you have any injuries or health conditions. This class isn't suitable during pregnancy unless you already have a well established existing Ashtanga/flow yoga practice.

Classes begin with a warm up - this gives a cardio element missing from more static types of yoga so you’ll burn more calories (estimates range from 300-450 calories per hour compared to around 200 per hour for more static yoga classes).

Then we tackle a series of first standing and then seated poses - a whole body workout designed not only to improve your flexibility but also to create integrated, functional strength and boost wellbeing.

We finish with cool-down poses and a short relaxation. This helps your body maximise the benefits of your practice, aids mental focus and reduces stress and tension. No matter how hard you have worked, you’ll get up off your mat on a pretty addictive yoga high!

What to bring

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for exercise. Make sure it's reasonably form-fitting – a baggy tshirt falling into your face every time you fold forward will quickly get annoying. If you wear shorts then make sure the person behind you won’t get an eyeful when you bend over!

No need to break out the lycra…unless you really want to.

There are a handful of spare mats available in class to borrow on a first come, first served basis; email to reserve a mat.

If you start coming regularly you might want to buy your own. You can buy a decent yoga mat for around £15 online. A Wii-Fit mat or camping roll can be a good substitute if you are feeling tight in the wallet as well as the hamstrings.

A top quality mat like the Manduka Prolite is pricier at £60 wish but will last a life time.

If you sweat a lot try chalk or liquid chalk to keep your hands and feet from slipping. Consider bringing an absorbent gym towel. "The Mat" by Lululemon is a fantastic grippy mat for people who slip and slide.
